Berlin – Where Is My Currywurst?

Ok everyone. R U ready for my Berlin report !?

The original plan was to taste THE typical & traditional Berlin CURRYWURST. (The vegan version of course. What else?.) And then try to make a fabulous Rachel style healthy(er) version when I get home.

Alright. Here’s the story…

I looked up all the places that sell those Berlin classics and chose a restaurant slash eatery that wasn’t even the closest to the hostel where I was staying in Friedrichshain. Why? Because that place was called “Yellow Sunshine”! Who wouldn’t want to eat at place that sounds like you’re going to be served rays of fresh sunshine? I already was imagining myself shining golden like curry while eating the best Currywurst in town.

So… I went over to Kreuzberg & looked for that place. Unfortunately, it closed down & I found out before Google did.

By then I was so hungry and really didn’t want to go all the way back just to get some food. Notably because there are restaurants with vegan options at every street corner in Kreuzberg. Ok. So I googled “vegan” and the restaurant that popped up closest to me I went for.

BEST DESCISION!

I freak’n love Berlin! Vegan food is in everyones face all day long & everywhere! No gettn around vegan food here. So if you’re looking for a city to not starve as a vegan – Berlin is the place to be! Ok, enough of that Berlin advertisement. I just had to let you know, just in case you haven’t heard how progressive Berlin is.

Anyway, so I went from imagining myself as a golden curry sun to my best version of a hungry monster…

restaurant wildeküche

As you can surely tell… “Wildeküche” is the name of the fancy, down-to-earth, cozy restaurant. There I ordered the first main dish which was a mushroom ragout with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. WOW! The ragout was just so goooooddd!!! The waiter told me they get the “chicken” which was in the ragout from the vegetarian butcher here in Kreuzberg. It’s a meat substitute made of soy and wheat protein. So basically, what the Currywurst I was initially going for is made of. So, no loss there.

Lucky me! I made a friend before lunchtime who gave me his private vegan Currywurst recipe. (Sadly) it includes ready-made sausages from the supermarket. Which just inspires me even more to create an all-natural homemade healthy(er) version of that Berlin speciality for myself & to share with you.
