Spiced Chai Latte

How to cope with cold days in autumn and winter in this part of the world? My answer: With a spiced chai latte! Here’s my easy and quick recipe for a warming, vegan spiced chai latte that will spice up cold and grey days and make you feel ready to tackle them.

Your wish is my command! 😀

This recipe is actually the first one I am publishing because of high demand. It always makes me very happy to talk to people interested in my recipes, in vegan cuisine or who like to hear more about my work. You might imagine the excitement to be a part of the Basel Vegan Messe 2020 again and sell cakes from my eBook “Kuchenfreu(n)de” (I only have a German version of it so far, sorry… ).

And what goes perfectly with a yummy cake? A chai latte of course! My multifunctional food processor, my Mouli, showed to be very helpful to make fresh chai latte on the spot.

Following the positive feedback for my spicy chai latte and the request on how to prepare, here is my recipe. The recipe uses vegan milk. However, I strongly suggest using vegan nut butter, add water and get your own vegan milk. All in line with zero waste and the advantage of not having to carry milk boxes.

Your own spice mix for your spiced chai latte

The spice mix is very easily done and you can use one teaspoon whenever you want to make a fresh spiced chai latte. If you need to buy the spices because you don’t have them at home, you can use them for many other recipes. Have a look at the apple cinnamon rolls or the pumpkin pie. A homemade spice mix might also be the perfect present, which can be used in many cuisines.

Healing spices

The book “Heilende Gewüze” (“healing spices”) that I got from my new affiliate partner, Narayana Verlag, is somewhat of a spice bible. On about 500 pages, it contains an incredible amount of information about spices, their use and their benefits. The

The assumption that some spices can be used for ailment prevention and healing various illnesses doesn’t come from anywhere. This book by biochemist Dr. Bharat B. Aggarwal, who worked as a professor in cancer research and immunology, is based on scientific studies that explain the effect of spices. Ingredients

  • 3 cm fresh bio ginger
  • 3 Tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 Tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/2 Tsp nutmeg powder
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 1/4 Tsp vanilla powder or 1/2 Tbsp vanilla essence
  • 1 pinch clove powder
  • 400 ml almond-/soy-/oat milk
  • 100 ml water
  • 1-2 Tbsp maple syrup
  • optional: 1 Tsp orange peel riffled

Instructions

  • Mix the spices well in a closable glass container. Put 1-2 Tsp in a pot or in the Moulinex i-Companion XL. Optionally, add the orange peel.
  • put finely ground ginger in a big pot or use the Mouli to grind. (Moulinex i-Companion XL settings: Knead and grind knife level 12, 20 seconds)
  • Add plant drink, water and maple syrup, cook for 15 minutes. (Moulinex i-Companion XL settings: Level 2, 80 degrees Celsius, 15 minutes)
  • Before serving, whisk through so you get foam. Optionally using a sieve, fill 2 glasses or cups. This way, the bits of ginger won't go into the cups as well. (Moulinex i-Companion XL settings: stirrer, level 11, 20 seconds)

Notes

Depending on the sweetness of the used plant drink, add maple syrup or a sweetener of your choice. Oat- and rice milk is very sweet by default, so technically you can also skip the maple syrup. And remember: with your nut butter, you can easily make your own vegan milk.
To make this spiced chai latte, I use my Moulinex i-Companion XL. You can use your food processor instead.
If you don't have fresh ginger at home, but ginger powder, you can use 1 tsp of the powder for the spice mix. The taste is definitely different than if you use fresh ginger though.
