Tasty and refreshing: a vegan Tzatziki is always welcome in summer.

A sauce classic

Tzatziki, or zaziki as it is often called in Germany, originates in the cuisine of the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Who invented it? Nobody really knows, because it roots in Greek, Turkish and Lebanese national cuisine. In central Europe, tzatziki is mostly associated with Greek cuisine.

As a staple food in Greece, tzatziki is served with bread at the start of a meal. It is refreshing as a side dish to gyros or on a pita sandwich. It has become very popular as a dip with raw vegetables as a snack or a part of a Mediterranean mezze meal.

Another classic in the Mediterranean and Middle East cuisine is Hummus. Check my recipe for Pink Beetroot and Peppermint Hummus that might just be perfect for your platter or your mezze meal!

When preparing your vegan tzatziki sauce, I suggest you think big: keep a good batch in your fridge to elevate a plain sandwich or some raw vegetables.
